Ugh...I feel like crap!

Do you know what I have spent the last two days doing? Eating nothing but CRAP!! I decided that since I have lost so much weight and haven't had all the foods I love in so long, I was going to eat ALL of those crappy foods in two days. Blah. I don't like how I feel at all. It is yucky. It has definitely given me the motivation I need to get moving and get back to eating healthy. But now that I am where I want to be, I can experiment a little with points, different exercises...

In a way, I am grateful for this experience. It has made me see that I do not want to feel this way. No wonder I was so blah all the time before I lost weight. This is how I ate all the time! It is amazing how much difference a healthy lifestyle really makes in my overall quality of life! So tomorrow, I am back in the swing.

"You're too little..."

I had the most awesome thing happen to me today!! I went to buy a couple of shakes for me and hubby. I walked out to my car carrying two small shakes and walked by an older lady who was sitting in her car with the window rolled down. She asked if I was going to eat both of the shakes. I told her I wasn't. She responded by saying that if it was her she would probably end up eating both of them. Then she said "But you're too little to eat both of those shakes by yourself." She called me little!!! NO ONE has EVER called me little before!! I just wanted to give her a big old hug and tell her she made my day!! Talk about motivation to keep going and not put the weight back on...!!! WAAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOO!!!

Tools I use....a buddy

Lately, I have had several people ask me how I have lost all my weight. So I thought I would do a few posts that tell what I have used (worked or not), where I got them, how much they cost, etc.

My first tool, and in my opinion, the most important one, is some sort of "buddy". I have tried and tried to lose weight on my own and it has NEVER worked. For me, the buddy had to be someone I was accountable to (ie. more than just a friend who was also dieting). I guess maybe I should say "someone to be accountable to" because that is more what I mean, but "buddy" is easier to type!

The first go round, I had my hubby's work as my "buddy". With hubby's work, I knew that I would be weighing in, it would be recorded, and people would know whether or not I lost weight.

Again, for me, it helps if the buddy comes with some sort of reward. The reward with hubby's work was $300 dollars. Yeah, GREAT motivation. If you can get a big group of people together, I would definitely recommend this strategy. Each person chipped in $20. The third place winner got their money back. Second place doubled their money ($40). And the winner gets the rest of the pool. The trick with this one is that everyone has to be willing and able to weigh in at a specific time each week on the same scale in the same location (believe it or not, the floor underneath the scale can make your weight vary by as much as a full pound).

This go round, my buddy is my neighbor. Every Monday, we weigh in at my house. It makes me be accountable. I can't just tell myself that I'll get back on track next week because no one will know because she will know. This blog has also helped with that because I am accountable to whoever may be reading it. I had to throw in a little reward though. The winner gets to go out with their hubby while the other one watches all the kids (there are nine total).

So, if internal motivation is not your thing, find something external. There is nothing wrong with that! I was worried that having the external motivation would make me less likely to keep the weight off. But now that I have lost it (and worked so hard to do it), I am DETERMINED to KEEP IT OFF!!!

MAJOR milestone!!!

I haven't posted in a while! We had another weigh in yesterday. I officially weigh in the 140's!!! I have stepped on the scale at different times and been there but this was an official weigh in! This is a major milestone because my husband has never (including our dating) seen me weighing in the 140's. When we met I was around 160. A week before I wedding, I did a crash diet and lost 10 pounds putting me at 150. So this is a major thing for me!

Oh, and about the crash diet - that is EXACTLY why I am so against diet pills, shakes, crash diets, (ie. supplements). Within a month of my wedding, I not only gained the 10 pounds back but an additional 10 pounds that I really never took back off! Not this time! This time I have worked too hard and too long to let it all go. I may fluctuate a little but I can't imagine gaining it all back after working so hard and knowing that it is possible to be where I am. And dang it - I FEEL GOOD!!!

I have to say, I think there is just a point where I finally got past my "I'm a fat slob" feeling. The first time I did this, I lost 25 pounds and I never really felt any different. Then I gained 5 back and have now lost 12 pounds and I can't believe the difference in how I feel! And I don't really mean I have more energy because I don't have all this excess weight I am carrying around. It is more of a feeling of almost liking what I see in the mirror. That is a huge motivation for me to stick with what I have done and keep it off.

So if you're just starting out or have been doing this on and off (I have been there too) KEEP GOING. DO NOT QUIT!! You will get to a point where all your hard work WILL PAY OFF!! I never, ever thought I would get to this point. I thought I would always hate my body. Just to clarify, I don't, by any means, have the body I wish I had, but what I have feels healthier and tons better than it has for a very long time.

YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Waist not....???

I've always felt like I had a rather large waist. It is the part of my body that I hate the most. But it seems like I am finally starting to chip away at my waistline! Last time I did a competition, I went and got some size 12 pants. I haven't been wearing them because I have been lazy and have been lounging around in sweats. I put a pair on today and GUESS WHAT? They are too big!! They fit when I bought them! So, I got my trusty old belt out. I have never really worn a belt but had to buy one a couple of months ago to keep some of my pants from falling off. When I bought the belt, I could only do it up on the first hole. Well, today, I used the FOURTH hole!

I remember the last time I could squeeze into a size 8 pair of pants. It was about 16 years ago! And I remember being shocked that I fit into them! So if I can get down to a size 8.....WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I think the hardest thing about weight loss is the first part. For me, I was already wearing clothing that was either snug or had elastic waistband so I didn't really notice a difference in my body size. But now, it seems like I am noticing change fairly regularly and it has been great! So if you are just starting and getting frustrated because you don't notice a difference, KEEP GOING!! You will start to notice change and it is the most AWESOME feeling in the world to know that all your hard work and determination are finally paying off!

I got my groove back!!

At least I hope I did. I finally feel like I WANT to do this last ten pounds. I exercised today and yesterday. I have been sticking to my points. And I don't feel like I am torturing myself all day long! I am not quite sure what did it. I just finally feel like I WANT to do it. It is so hard to get motivated when it feels like a chore. I just need it to last 9 1/2 more weeks!

I have figured out how people with a lot of kids stay skinny. They are the moms who put their kids in piano, tball, soccer, swimming, dance, tumbling, ice skating..... They don't have time to eat because they are running kids to and fro all day long!

I am not that kind of mom. We sit at home all day because I don't dare take five kids in public by myself. So I sit at home and eat all day long! Guess I better get myself busy. I can use the money that I would have spent on a gym membership and put my kids in all sorts of stuff. Okay, not really, but I do need to get out and do more! Then I am too busy to eat and my kids have a life!

Weigh in

I pretty much sucked at the weigh in today! I gained a pound but I knew I would because I just didn't have any motivation last week. I am still going back and forth on the menu thing. I liked it because it helped me stick to a set plan, but then when I didn't have it, I just went crazy. My old way actually did work...I just don't know. I do have to say though that gaining a pound definitely made me want to do better (today anyway). Seriously though. I just need to get off this last 13ish pounds...I know, I know...that is all we ever say, "If I could just do this, then I would be happy," and then once you do it, you move on to something else.

Just some thoughts I have had recently. I have been really down on myself the last little while. I twist everything everyone says or does into some reason that they hate me (and who knows, maybe they really do). But this has only been since I have gone off my "diet." It really got me to thinking about depression and how maybe our eating patterns play a role in depression. Then I got thinking that the time in my life that I was at my worst (depression) was right after I had my first baby. I blamed it on post pardom depression (which I still think played a major role) but I realized that is also the time in my life when I was eating my worst and weighed more than I have at any other time in my life - including more than I weighed being 9 months pregnant!

So I have two theories. One is that eating healthier and more on a schedule helps physically by making my body healthier and keeping my blood sugar at a more constant level (I have a whole post to do on my theories with that one). My other is just the mental aspect. When I know I am eating healthier, I feel better about myself. When I know I am eating crappy, I feel bad about myself and feel like I have no self control. If I don't like myself, how can I think that others can like me?

That is not to say that my entire mental state hangs in the balance on whether or not I am following a set diet plan. But I do think that it plays a major role.

Guess I better run so I can exercise while the babies are sleeping!

In the dumps

I am having a really hard time getting motivated this time around. Why is being healthy such a dread? Okay, I don't dread BEING healthy, just what it takes to get that way. I haven't been doing real great, but not horrible either.

I have decided to do something I swore I would never do. I made up a menu to follow. The reason I have hated menus is because I think they are too restrictive. That is why I went with Weight Watchers because you can eat the foods you normally eat. This time around though, that is just not working. I eat way too many of my points early and have nothing left later in the day.

I am currently on day 2 of my menus. I have done okay. I figured if I got online and shared my menu and how I did, it would help me be more motivated to stick to it. This also gives me a better idea of the food groups I am eating rather than a snack pack here and an ice cream pop there to fill points. So here is yesterday:

(I get 22 points and I split my weekly points up into daily points giving me 27 points. For the first week or two, I try to be a little flexible so I don't get discouraged and give up from the get go.)

Breakfast: 1/2 cup milk, 1 ounce cereal, multi-vitamin (4 points)
Snack: 1 1/2 cups raspberries, snack pack (3 points)
Lunch: 2 pieces delight bread, 1 Tbsp peanut butter, fruit cup, V-8 (5 points)
Snack: mozzarella cheese stick, Fiber One bar (4 points)
Dinner: homemade pizza, crystal light (10 points)
Snack: fudge bar, fiber chewables (1 point)

How I did:
I skipped the fudge bar and ate a won ton that my hubby brought home from work. BUT, then I ate an ice cream sandwich (2 points) and a 1/3 of a donut (2 points). So, I went four points over but I actually exercised yesterday so I really only went over by two points in week 1. Oh, and I forgot my fiber (which according to the calculator is -1 point but I didn't figure that in to the menu points anyway, so still 2 points over). Not bad!

Today's menu:

Breakfast: 1 hard-boiled egg, 1 cup Frusion, multi-vitamin (4 points)
Snack: banana (2 points)
Lunch: Lean Cuisine, fruit cup (7 points)
Snack: 1/2 cup cottage cheese, Special K crackers (4 points)
Dinner: 1 cup Spanish rice, 1 oz cheese, 1 cup milk, 1 cup broccoli (9 points)
Snack: 3 cups air popped popcorn, fiber chewables (1 point)

So far, so good. I did have to switch the order around a bit because I took the kids to the movies and ice cream (and didn't eat anything). So now I'm down to dinner and snack!

I found it!

Okay, so I found some motivation...that is, IF I can get my motivation motivated! I have decided I am a lot more competitive than I gave myself credit for and decided to get a friend to do another competition with me. The only problem is getting her not to quit before she starts!

I was doing some thinking last night. We went to an all-you-can-eat buffet last night. I didn't do as well as I should have because I figured I might as well enjoy myself before I get back to work (I did MUCH better than I have in the past though. I chose healthier options and didn't keep eating until I thought I would puke. I only refilled my plate once AND I only had ONE dessert). That got me to thinking, why does food have to be so dang enjoyable? In the past, when I have been successful, I have been able to change my mindset from "food is enjoyable, gotta have as much as I can fit into my body" to "food (at least in excess) is what makes me unhappy." I just need to figure out how to change that mindset!

Take last night for instance. When I have gone to these types of restaurants in the past, my mindset is "get as much as you can while you can get it" and "I have to get my money's worth." Money's worth of what? ...being fat and miserable? ...having no energy to do the things I love? ...getting one step closer to a heart attack? Why do we as a general rule even think that way? "I have to get as much out of this as I can..." Yeah, I may get more food, but in the end, I have done myself FAR more damage than good by eating all that food!

Getting that out helped! Maybe I'll have to print this one out and put it on my fridge! Food is required to sustain my life, nothing more, nothing less. I need to make choices that will sustain my life in a good way, and make me healthier and happier!

Need motivation...

I am currently trying to find a new motivator to get back into the swing of things. That is horrible! I should be motivated by the simple fact that I would be healthier and a better mother to my children. Not to mention the fact that I just feel better (energy) and better about myself (self-esteem).

I need to lose another 15 pounds by the end of summer. I did finally break down and buy some new clothes. I was waiting until I lost more weight but decided I needed some pants that fit (mine literally fall off now). I was waiting because I wanted to lose the rest of my weight before I bought new clothes so that would motivate me but...

I did a post before on drinking V-8 to get my veggies down. I must say, I really like the V-8 frusion a lot better. It does have a lot more calories (2 points per 8 oz glass) but I get a fruit and a veggie in each serving and I don't have to plug my nose to get it down!

Blah

I was doing really good. Then came Spring Break (for which my husband took off work), Easter, my son's birthday, that time of the month....ALL IN THE SAME WEEKEND! I know, blah, blah, blah, excuses, excuses...

That is why I knew I needed to get back on here and make myself be accountable (even if it is only to a couple of people, plus my imaginary audience). I have gotten back into decent eating habits. I have stuck with my points the last couple of days but I wouldn't say those points have been the healthiest of choices! Now I just need to get back on the exercise bandwagon. I can't believe how much different I feel not exercising.

I have only gained a pound so that is good but my ultimate goal is to loose another 12 pounds or so.
That puts me about 5 pounds under my target weight which will give me a little wiggle room!

Week 1, Day 7

Well, I barely made it through the first week. I'm tellin' ya' though, if I didn't have the money/husband competition to keep me going, I'd be for calling it quits. I am a big wus (don't have any clue how to spell that)! And my husband is kicking MY butt! It was supposed to be the other way around. He is exercising 2-3 times a day. I just don't have the time or the motivation!

I caved yesterday. My kids were having cheese quesadillas for lunch. I cooked them on the skillet with a light coat of buttter. Oh it smelled good! So, I caved and ate half of one of them. BUT...I still only ate 26 points yesterday! So while I may have caved, I did still stay under my points. I have been doing decent at staying within the points. Now I just need to work on making the points that I eat a little more on the healthy side!

Sometimes, I don't think it's fair though. My husband is at work all day. He takes what he is going to eat with him and that is all he can eat. I am surrounded by food all day and feeding my kids all day and I just have to try my best to resist. Then there's the whole exercise thing. He works out at work and then comes home and exercises again at night. By the time night gets here for me, I am so tired from chasing kids all day that I exercise just won't happen. So I do it in the morning but then nothing gets done around the house....blah, blah, blah.

Okay, I need to be more positive. That is one thing that I have found is key to any goal. You have to have a positive attitude and you have to WANT to change. I just wish there was a magic pill to help me WANT to change. I know I NEED to change, I just don't WANT to do it.

My workout this morning seemed harder than it has before. I don't know why. On The Biggest Loser, they always say week 2 is the hardest. Maybe they mean motivation or energy or something. I don't know. I still did as much as I could. One thought that I had is that maybe I wasn't doing the moves correctly before and now I am so they are straining my muscles like they should. I don't know.

My husband is doing really good though. He has already been doing this for 12 weeks and his weigh in was today. He still lost 5 pounds and .4% body fat. According to our scale, I lost almost 4 pounds but I have no idea on the body fat because our scale doesn't measure that. I can't wait for 3 more weeks when I can do a real weigh in. Hopefully, I will see some big changes. That would definitely be a huge motivator.

I think a big part of my problem is that I want to have a super model body when I am done with this. I know I won't. I never have. So I worry that when I don't achieve that, I will feel like I failed. I have got to change my mindset and be happy about little changes instead of wanting to be what the world considers "perfect." Being healthy and happy is all that really matters.

Day 6

I did good yesterday! I only ate 27 points! Usually, I look around trying to find something to "fill" my points but yesterday I didn't! I was talking to my husband last night. A commercial came on for Slimfast. It talked about how it keeps you from being hungry. We both just kind of laughed.

Hunger is not my problem. I don't eat because I am hungry. I eat because I like the taste of food. I usually am not hungry when I eat. I just want something in my mouth. I know, try gum, mints, etc. Those actually do make me feel hungry. So, I put something in my mouth to keep me from eating, and then I end up feeling hungry which increases my likelihood to eat! Maybe that trick works for some, but not so well for me!

Right now, my boys are eating graham crackers and milk. That is one of my FAVORITE snacks! I must resist! I ate a yogurt so I would be "eating" but not getting nearly the calories but...

I worked out this morning. It was "strength and sculpt" day. I still suck at it but I did a little better than last time. My biggest problem is the crunches. I can do the rest of it (at the lowest level anyway) but I totally suck at crunches. Having five babies in seven years with no attempt at regaining those muscles has really taken it's toll. I do have an Ab Lounge but I am waiting on my husband to fix it and maybe that will help. I can hope anyway.

This whole thing definitely is a lot easier with external motivation. When I was completely on my own with just "desire" as my motivation, nothing worked. In fact, I gained weight. But knowing that I could win money has its perks. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that I challenged my husband and I am very competitive. It will be great to kick his butt at SOMETHING! He gets to weigh in every week though and see his progress. Because we live so far from his work and I have to bring four small children with me, I only get to weigh in monthly. I think that has it's advantages and disadvantages.

I am hoping that getting into shape will give me more energy so I can get more done around the house. But another quote I like comes to mind - "Cleaning the house while children still live there is like trying to shovel snow while it is still snowing." SO TRUE! I also feel like I use my "cleaning" time to exercise. How do I do it all?

I hate how expensive eating healthier is! I would love to stock my pantry with low calorie snacks, fruit and juice drinks, soups, etc. but it is so expensive! My husband likes his Smart Ones desserts and Lean Cuisine meals and he actually does use the Slimfast shakes. By the time I buy all that, my budget is pretty much cleaned out and I still have to buy food for the rest of us, diapers, formula, blah, blah, blah...

Okay, enough whining for now. I've got kids to attend to...You'd think I'd lose weight just chasing them around all day...
